How to Get Over a Breakup FAST and Reclaim Your Best Self
Breakups are not only about losing a person. They are about losing a vision of your future and sometimes even a sense of who you are. They can leave you shattered, looping through pain each night, and wondering when the punch to the gut will finally stop.
Here is the truth. Breakups hurt. There is no magic button to skip the heartbreak. But you can speed up your recovery and come out stronger, wiser, and more in tune with yourself than ever before.
As the author of Silence Is Your Superpower, Letters to Myself, Bossing Your Breakup and my newest book The No Contact Theory, I have guided thousands through the storm. Let me share with you the golden rules to help you get over your ex quickly, but also in a way that lasts.
💔 Step 1: Feel Every Feeling
It is perfectly okay to cry, to feel angry, or to feel lost.
Suppressing your emotions only traps you in emotional quicksand. Studies have shown that accepting and feeling your emotions is the quickest route out of grief. You do not move forward by avoiding the pain, you move through it.
Try this: Each day, give yourself ten minutes to sit quietly with your emotions. Hold your strongest feeling in your mind without reacting to it. You will notice it start to lose its grip on you.
📵 Step 2: The No Contact Rule is Your Lifeline
If you want to heal, you must not call, text, or stalk their social media. Not even once.
Science shows that your brain lights up during a breakup in the same way it does during drug withdrawal. Each peek at their page or each “like” you notice is like feeding the addiction. No contact allows your brain to reset.
I go much deeper into this in The No Contact Theory, where I explain exactly why no contact is not cruel but closure, and how most people do it wrong. If you are struggling to stay strong, that book will become your survival guide.
🧠 Step 3: Rewire Your Brain, Rewrite Your Story
Love is powerful chemistry. When it ends, your brain craves the oxytocin that once kept you bonded. But the beauty of the brain is that it can be rewired.
How to do it:
Journal every day. Write about what you miss, why it hurts, and what you are choosing to heal.
Practise gratitude, even for the lessons pain has taught you.
Build new routines that give your mind new anchors. Walk a different route home. Try a new class. Learn something you have always put off.
Challenge: Each night, write one thing you are grateful for that has nothing to do with your ex. Over time, you will see your brain gently shifting.
💫 Step 4: Focus on Growth, Not Absence
Moving on is not about forgetting them. It is about letting go and choosing to see what the breakup gave you.
Maybe it gave you space to breathe again. Maybe it reminded you that your worth is not measured by someone else’s attention. Maybe it was the push you needed to finally say “I deserve better.”
This is the moment to reframe your story. Tell yourself: “They left because I was ready to grow.” Remind yourself: “Now my self-respect gets to catch up with my heart.”
👯 Step 5: Build a Tribe, Even if it is Small
Healing happens through connection. Find one or two people who bring you peace and strength. Do not worry about having a large circle. Quality is what matters.
When you lean on them, do it to connect and to laugh as much as to cry. Keep away from people who dismiss your pain or feed drama. Protect your heart space.
🥂 Bonus Step: Your Ex Was Not a Trophy, They Were a Teacher
Pain is never pointless. Your breakup taught you what you do not want, revealed where you still need to heal, and proved that you can move forward on your own two feet.
So now it is your time to shine again. Do something just for you today. Not because anyone else expects it, but because you deserve it.
Final Words from Your Breakup Coach
Getting over a breakup fast is not about erasing memories. It is not about proving your ex wrong. It is about proving yourself right. You were always enough, and no one has the power to dim your light.
Every day is a chance to rebuild yourself in your authentic image. Breakups can feel like the end, but for those who are brave enough to heal, they are the beginning of a new chapter that is brighter and truer than before.
You are not broken. You are evolving.
Onward, my beautiful badass.
